HOW THIS POLL WORKS

A plain-language guide to how votes are counted, verified and protected in the Beyond the Ballot community poll.

How this poll works

Beyond the Ballot runs two community opinion polls: the Cape Town Mayoral Poll and the Mitchells Plain Ward Poll. Pick a candidate, review your choice and confirm. Candidates are shown in a random order for every visitor so that no one benefits from being listed first.

Results update live and are shown as totals and percentages. This is an independent community poll, not an official election, IEC ballot or scientific forecast.

Who can take part

Anyone with an interest in Cape Town can share their view. No account, ID number or address is needed.

  • One vote per person, per poll.
  • The ward poll is for people who live in Mitchells Plain. Choose your ward first.
  • Verified votes indicate successful mobile verification, not electoral eligibility.

All votes and verified votes

All votes counts every accepted vote. ★ Verified votes counts only votes that were later confirmed with a free one-time SMS code. Verifying never adds a second vote. It moves your existing vote into the verified count.

You can switch between the two views on every results page.

Fairness

  • Each browser and network is checked using one-way coded identifiers to stop repeat or automated voting.
  • Unusual bursts of votes are held for review and may be excluded from the totals.
  • Each verified mobile number can confirm only one vote per poll.

Your privacy

We never show or store your phone number in readable form. Optional survey answers are anonymous, and groups smaller than 25 people are hidden in any breakdown. Read the full privacy notice.
